Just as difficulty mastering the shading was the main reason I'd been shying away painting darker-skinned ladies, it was also part of the reason I've not painted many gents. I was concerned they'd either look blah or like drag queens. "But, but, but...he's not wearing make-up, I swear!"
It was time to conquer another fear:
"If Wishes Were Fishes"
This is Caleb. He is the cousin of Amaya, who is one of the few remaining Starcatchers.
Occasionally, just occasionally, the Starcatchers miss a falling star and it tumbles to land (or sometimes sea!). Fortunately, Amaya (and the other Starcatchers) have earthbound family members who are so very helpful in retrieving the wayward stars.
Fortunately, the Starcatchers have super duper fine-tuned radar system that helps them pinpoint fallen stars, and (extremely) long-distance range walky-talkies so they can communicate with Caleb (& the other Finders).
A large percentage of fallen stars wind up in the ocean and Caleb will tell you, as vast as oceans are, it's quite convenient to have a fishy friend who will give you a lift when combing the seemingly endless water for something that's lost.
(Caleb normally doesn't dress so formally for these missions, but he'd just finished up his duties as a ring-bearer in a wedding when Amaya called him this time. Starfinding is a time-sensitive business. Too long in the water can dim a star's light or worse...lessen its power to make wishes come true!)
I love painting, period, but I really, really enjoyed painting this one. It was probably the most fun I've had doing a painting in quite a while. If my memory isn't failing me, this is the first non-commissioned painting of a boy by himself that I've done. And I hope no one thinks I'm conceited -- but I kind of love it. No, I LOVE IT love it. (The original is already in the shop & prints will be up later today.)
And yeah, yeah, I know what someone's gotta be thinking: But KJ, boys can't ride fish! That's illogical and impractical.
But you're talking to a girl that lives in a world where dogs ride lawnmowers. And if dogs can ride lawnmowers, boys can certainly ride fish:
(This is Happy, and okay, that's an unflattering shot. I caught the poor guy mid-yawn. Cutting grass is SO boring!)
(It kinda looks like he has only one eye. He has two eyes, I promise. The right one -- which doesn't look like it's there -- is brown and the left one is blue. It is a bit freaky at first, I know. But he is a total sweetheart and you get past it.)
2nd P.S. Thank you all for the kind words about Buddy.
3rd P.S. The stars are actually super glittery.
